Did You Know? Career centers are the central resource for finding part-time jobs and internships, completing work-study requirements, and getting career advice. But counselors say students often overlook other career center resources… that might give them the edge in landing that competitive position while they are still in school. Many administrators, faculty, staff and students are clueless about the quality and range of career services offered at their campus career centers. If you feel your campus career center is underutilized, we can help you change that!

This is the second year you will be receiving Career Quick Tips, an innovative electronic newsletter for California’s Community College Career Center Counselors. You will receive one newsletter each month primarily targeted to help you market and build your campus career center. We lead off this month with a generic, but customizable, PowerPoint marketing presentation, Partnering for Career Success. Work with your supervisor to identify appropriate audiences that might include: Administrative Cabinet, Academic Senate, Academic Counselors, Department/Division Meetings, Staff Development Presentations, Student Leadership Classes and Student Clubs.

Try this:

  1. Download the attached PowerPoint template, Partnering for Career Success, to your computer. (17 slides)
  2. Review the slide show.
  3. Add your Career Center statistics or pictures of successful students so the PowerPoint tells your story.
  4. Adjust the PowerPoint show to suit your audience, this will help you capture their interest.
  5. Write down the outcome you want from the presentation, this will help you focus.
  6. Bring additional marketing materials, follow up with information instructors request.
  7. Collect data to advance your cause.
  8. Continue marketing.
