If you want to come up with good decisions for your work and your life, simply ask two questions; what do you want? And how will you know when you get it? Effective career centers have many valuable assessments, inventories, tools, and resources to offer students. However, it is important not to overlook asking students to do some personal reflection as a first step in the career guidance process. Students need to identify and share clues about themselves- their strengths/talents, interests and personality traits -- if they want engaging and productive career guidance. According to Richard Leider, people really do have their own solutions. Help your students begin their career journey of self discovery with an “ask them” -- Quick Clues to Success-activity.
Here is one way to include an “ask them” activity:
- Create an electronic “ask them” activity or modify the one attached to this CQT.
- Develop a companion guide for students to complete as they work through the “ask them” activity or modify the one attached to this CQT.
- Decide on the best way to distribute the “ask them” activity for easy student accessibility.
- Post the activity on your website and direct students to it.
- Attach the "Word" version of the activity and send it to students to complete on their PC.
- Download the activity to the career center computers for students to use prior to their meeting.
- Require students to complete “ask them” activity and bring their completed guide to their career counseling appointment.
- Track the productivity of the counseling session to decide on the benefits of the activity.
- Modify the activity based on student/counselor feedback.
